Cord

-14.  Cord

The Cord depicts a man and woman ensnared in one another’s embrace. They have become so integrated that it is difficult to say where one person ends and the other begins. Fused together, their embrace has become a prison that fosters addiction and codependence. Under the bed we see a cord that connects the two heads, attaching them to the neediness, emotional swings, and bondage of the other. If you find yourself holding the Cord card today, inspect the radius of your personal boundaries. It may be time to rebalance the scales of responsibility. Are you blaming others for outcomes that are yours alone? Are you taking ownership of patterns and behaviors that don’t belong to you? This is abandonment of the self. You are left drained, without an identity of your own.

If this card was pulled with the intent to provide advice:

Embrace total integration. Evaluate the facets of your life that are separated by boundaries. For example, perhaps it’s time for work life and pleasure to be integrated. Perhaps all the separate compartments of your life need to be melded into one large compartment. Perhaps there is no need for personal boundaries in your life at this time, rather a need for fusion.

Key descriptors:

Loss of identity, unholy relationship, neediness, drowning, smothering, codependency, leaked / parasitical energy, compliant complacency, over-responsibility or lack of personal boundaries.

Introspection:

  • Have I lost myself to a role, a job, or another?

  • Am I taking on the burdens of others and neglecting my own needs?

  • Conversely, am I being asked to enter into a one-way relationship, such as parents with a new baby or a sick child?
